Singing Mila Rodino

Singing the National Anthem of Bulgaria at the March 3 celebration at the Bulgarian Church in Phoenix, Arizona, Feb 27, 2005.

Performing in Bulgarian about Bulgaria's National Day

The students from the Bulgarian Sunday School read and recited poems about Botev, Levski, Hadji Dimiter and Chavdar Voivoda. The recital began with Az sum bulgarche. Though all of the kids spoke Bulgarian with some accent and an American intonation, we all felt we were a community and communicated in the Bulgarian language.

At HHS Theater

In the evening the school auditorium hosted a performance of Grease! and three of my students were on the crew: Garret, Emely and Trent. They all were awesome! We were taken back to the 1950s with their music, clothing, cars, language, school rules and life.

Today we made yoghourt for the second time at home. We used Yogourmet culture to make it. You may learn more about this product and how to get it at http://www.yogourmet.com.

The Icon of Virgin Mary with the Gifts

On February 21, 2005 we went to St. Anthony's Greek Orthodox Monastery. It is lovcated near Florence, a small town between Chandler and Tuscon. At mile marker 124 on Rte 79 we turned left into Paisano Drive and in about three-four minutes we stopped at the entrance of the monastery. The monastery parrot Toni welcomed us.

Violeta with a Scarf

I wore a lond skirt well below my knees, a scarf and a cardigan. Boyan was hot and took his cardigan off and rignt away he was approached by a monk who aksed him to put it on in order to cover his arms (he was wearing a short-sleeved shirt). If somebody does not have the appropriate clothing, the bookstore offers some limited supply of skirts, scarves and long-sleeved blouses.

Boyan Holding a Grapefruit

A young monk gave us some grapefruits and lemons from their garden. Boayn is standing at one of the churches with a grapefruiit.

A Skirt with a Safety Pin

Savka's skirt, though long, had a slit. She was offered a safety pin by a monk who asked her to pin her skirt.

A Common Means of Transportation

During the day the monks work. They are gardeners, construction workers, cooks, guides, carpenters, etc. To move fast on the premises, they sometimes use carts.

HISEF
Violeta in Cafeteria

There were booths with posters from research projects of 5-12-grade students in the gym, cafeteria, the main hallway and the lobby. And balloons in the colors of Hamilton High School were everywhere.

Solid Waste and Recycling in Chandler

The booth with information about all the solid waste (trash) and recycling programs in Chandler was very attractive. We saw pencils made of recycled money and small pencil sharpeners in the shape of garbage cans - what a good idea to remind the students that solid waste and recycling go together and everybody can contribute to recycling.
